Swisco Project overview
At Leys Construction, we take pride in delivering practical construction solutions for industrial and commercial environments across Devon. Our latest project saw us working alongside Swisco Recycling at one of their recycling centres in Paignton, where we were tasked with installing large fire break walls inside an operational storage building.
This challenging project required a combination of careful planning, specialist installation techniques, and close collaboration between all teams on site.
Precast Concrete Fire Break Wall Installation
The project involved the installation of 4.5 metre-high fire break walls constructed from precast concrete panels supported by steel columns. These structures were designed to improve fire safety within the recycling facility while providing a durable, long-term solution for the site.
As part of the works, our team installed the steel columns directly into the existing concrete floor by excavating pockets and concreting the supports securely into place. This required detailed coordination and extensive experience in both structural installation and groundworks services.
The precast concrete elements also formed a key part of the project, showcasing our expertise in commercial concreting services in Devon.
Overcoming Swisco Site Challenges
Like many industrial construction projects, this one came with unexpected challenges. During excavation works, our team encountered previously unknown concrete structures hidden beneath the existing slab. This required quick problem-solving on site to adapt the installation process safely and efficiently without delaying the programme.
Another major challenge involved lifting and positioning the concrete panels between the steel columns. Due to restricted head height within the building, crane operations had very limited clearance. Careful planning and excellent teamwork were essential to safely manoeuvre the heavy precast units into position.
Working closely with Radland Haulage and all contractors involved, the installation was completed successfully and safely, resulting in another satisfied client.
