At Leys Construction, we take pride in delivering projects that combine precision, efficiency, and quality. One of our current projects is for Caterfoods, a trusted supplier of frozen foods across Devon and the surrounding areas. The company needed a new drive-in picking freezer, after their previous unit suffered from frost damage that caused the concrete floor to crack and lift.
We were appointed as the principal contractor, managing the entire project from start to finish and coordinating multiple subcontractors to ensure every stage of the work was completed safely and to the highest standard.

Project Overview
1. Demolition & Site Clearance
The first step was carefully dismantling the existing freezer unit and removing all materials from the site. This included breaking up the old concrete floor, which had been compromised over time. Using hydraulic peckers on excavators, we cut the slab into manageable 1.5-meter squares before removal.

2. Groundworks & Excavation
Once the site was cleared, we excavated soft areas and installed effective land drainage systems to prevent future issues. Proper drainage is a crucial part of any foundation work, ensuring longevity and stability for the structure above. 3. Preparing the New Concrete Pad
After preparing the site, we poured a new concrete base to serve as a durable pad for the freezer. This step ensures the structure will remain stable, even under heavy operational use. Precision in the concrete pour is critical, especially for industrial installations where weight distribution matters.

4. Freezer Construction
The new freezer walls are being built with careful attention to detail. Once complete, the unit will feature a heating pad and insulation to maintain temperature control, along with a further 150mm concrete floor inside for durability and safety. These enhancements will ensure Caterfoods’ new drive-in freezer performs efficiently for years to come.
